It says a lot in a Call of Duty campaign that includes a regular reunion of series icons like Captain Price, Soap McTavish, Gaz, and Ghost, that the character Modern Warfare 2 gets the most buzz for is its deadliest villain. Valeria Garza has captured the full attention of the CoD community, and some have already called her out become a reproducible operator (Opens in a new tab) in multiplayer And, yes, it’s because people are thirsty for it.
Note: Modern Warfare 2 campaign spoilers below.
Garza is a new face in the Modern Warfare-verse: the anonymous leader of the El Sin Nombre cartel and the ruthless leader of the fictional Mexican town of Las Almas (where much of the campaign takes place). He’s also ex-Mexican Army and an old friend of new Team member Alejandro Price, who is understandably upset to see him use his military experience to become a powerful crime lord. Garza is arguably one of the most infamous characters on a list that includes corrupt generals, PMC war criminals and aspiring terrorists. She’s hot too.
You can write Garza’s fame (Opens in a new tab) to his appearance (and given the fancams already appearing on TikTok (Opens in a new tab) it’s definitely a factor), but it goes a little deeper than that. Despite only appearing in a single mission and a few scenes, Garza leaves a lasting impression in a story dominated by boys with gruff voices. It’s an imposing presence in its titular mission, “El Sin Nombre,” in which Alejandro, Soap McTavish, and Soap’s 2009 mohawks infiltrate El Sin Nombre headquarters to identify and capture the organization’s faceless leader. Soap is questioned by Garza (who believes that he is only the general of the cartel, not the head himself) and the player is forced to answer trivia about the who and what of the story so far in order not to get shot in the chest. Actress Maria Elisa Camargo, who also nailed Garza’s performance, really owns the scene and plays the good cop/bad cop interrogator well.

Camargo himself is having a blast interacting with Garza’s unsuspecting fans, as well as embracing his thirst trap status.
“Such an honor to feel accepted by the Call of Duty community, I respect you,” he wrote in an Instagram post. (Opens in a new tab) yesterday “Shocked and overwhelmed by all the comments on my social media (I read them all), the memes,” the smart/accurate comments about my performance and my mom’s.” In an earlier post, Camargo described her foray into video game acting as “a completely new and challenging experience, and a world A SURREAL time with the loveliest, kindest, most badass group of talented people in the world!”

Personally, I still hold a candle to Farah Karim – the calm, precise and vengeful freedom fighter protagonist of the previous Modern Warfare campaign. Karim briefly returns in Modern Warfare 2 to help Captain Price take out the terrorist convoy, but unfortunately it’s the worst mission in the game.
I hope Infinity Ward takes note of Garza’s growing fan base and reacts accordingly. If the Valeria cover wasn’t already in the works, it will probably come. The enthusiasm speaks for itself.
