Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi brings life-saving, state-of-the-art artificial intelligence technology to the diagnosis and treatment of stroke | Job Binary

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, a Mubadala Health partner, has introduced another leading innovation. ARTIS Icono, the most advanced stroke intervention system in the region, includes 2D and 3D imaging with artificial intelligence. It’s a potentially life-changing innovation now available in the UAE for patients suffering from stroke, a serious condition caused by a blood clot in the brain.

“For victims of ischemic stroke, the most common type of stroke, timing is critical,” said Dr. Khalil Zahra, director of neurointerventional surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Neurological Institute. “Minutes matter. Typically, we aim to perform a so-called neurothrombectomy, which dissolves the clot in the patient’s brain, within about six hours of the onset of symptoms. This new system makes the process much faster and more accurate, saving lives.”

In a traditional stroke intervention, the patient begins with a CT scan, and surgeons review the imaging manually before surgery to dissolve the clot. ARTIS Icono transforms this process by using artificial intelligence to deliver unparalleled image quality and reconstruction in real time. Surgeons can skip the CT scan and start treatment immediately. This saves valuable time, improves surgeon visibility and exposes the patient to less harmful radiation.

“According to the World Health Organization, every fourth person is at risk of having a stroke during their lifetime. In the UAE, approximately 25% of UAE adults have hypertension, which increases the risk of stroke in our population,” Dr Zahra said. “Here, stroke is the leading cause of disability and the third leading cause of death. It has never been more important to have the most innovative technology available for patient care. This highly advanced system ultimately helps us provide stroke victims with the best care in the world and the best possible chance of recovery.

The ARTIS Icono is just one of many technological innovations that Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, recently rated the region’s best smart hospital by Newsweek, is using to bring patient care into the future.

The new system will be housed in the Neurological Institute’s Neurovascular Medicine Program and Stroke Center at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, which offers a full range of the latest diagnostic and treatment options for patients with stroke and other cerebrovascular disorders.

To mark World Stroke Day on October 29, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is encouraging the community to learn the signs of a stroke using the acronym FAST – because minutes can save lives:

The face hangs

Weakness of hands

Speech difficulty

Time to call 998

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has been Abu Dhabi’s designated stroke center since it was officially designated by the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Health in 2015. Their surgeons have performed over 500 thrombectomies over the past seven years.
