As part of the India-UAE trade agreement, on 18 February 2022, India announced the establishment of the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the United Arab Emirates.

Since then, the parties have been in contact to prepare the proposal’s follow-up actions. IIT Delhi has a small group on the map of Abu Dhabi to implement the proposal.

This is the first time that an IIT is being established outside the country.

According to media reports, teams from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were in New Delhi this month to study the model at IIT-D and interact with faculty and students.

Prof V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras, told local media that the IITs’ overseas expansion has been put on a “fast track” and hopes to open an Abu Dhabi campus, along with a campus in Malaysia and Tanzania, within a year.
