India shipped 14.8 million personal computers (PCs) in calendar 2021, registering a year-on-year (YoY) growth of 44.5%, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).

The country’s PC market, which includes desktops, laptops and workstations, delivered a strong year with 44.5% year-on-year growth in shipments in 2021, with the notebook category driving the volume, with shipments reaching 11.6 million units. The desktop category has seen 30% growth driven by demand from businesses, SMEs, education and individual consumers.

The market continued to be buoyant as vendors shipped more than 4 million PCs in the October-December quarter alone. The retail segment saw strong growth of 81.4% in the fourth quarter, while the consumer segment saw modest growth as retailers focused on inventory corrections after a very strong 3Q21.

“As schools and colleges continued to operate remotely for the second year in a row, the demand for a computing device became very important for students. Some students who previously used smartphones/tablets for their virtual classes opted for a PC for the obvious benefits, such as a larger screen and ease of use,” said Bharath Shenoy, Senior Market Analyst, PC Devices, IDC India.

The consumer segment saw strong growth despite facing supply disruptions during the year and major brands achieved better allocations and were able to ship higher volumes of PCs, he added.

According to IDC analysis, HP Inc. continued to lead the overall PC market with a share of 31.5% as its shipments grew by 58.7% year-on-year in CY2021. Dell Technologies secured the second position with a 23.6% share and 47% growth in 2021. Lenovo continued to maintain its third position behind Dell with shares of 17.4% and 18.4% in 4Q21 and CY2021, respectively. Acer Group maintained the fourth position with a market share of 8.2% in 2021 and a share of 7.7% in 2021, while ASUS maintained the fifth position with a share of 4.4% in 2021 and a share of 5.9% in 2021, in It grew by 36.1%. in 2021

Commenting on the outlook, Navkendar Singh, Director, Client Devices Research, IDC India said, “The market saw unprecedented demand for PCs in both business and consumer segments over the past two years, but demand is expected to soften in 2022.”
