  • The billionaire gave 600 thousand to 5 million dollars to 40 organizations.
  • His ex-wife, Mackenzie Scott, donated $55 million worth of homes and supported housing groups.

Jeff Bezos announced that he will donate a total of $123 million to 40 charities that fight homelessness in the United States.

The donation is part of his Bezos Day 1 Family Foundation, a $2 billion commitment to help homeless Americans.

Bezos, who is the world’s fourth-richest person on Bloomberg’s list of billionaires, announced the news in an Instagram post on Tuesday.

Additional information was provided in the press release, which states that grant recipients include 26 states and Puerto Rico.

$5 million, the highest amount to various charities, including The Salvation Army, PATH and Housing First, Inc. bailed for. Smaller donations of $600,000 were made to organizations such as HOME Inc.

Other groups awarded grants include the Homeless Alliance, Samish Indian Nation and Family Housing LA, according to a press release.

“It’s an honor to support these groups,” Bezos wrote in an Instagram post.

Representatives for Bezos did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

The Bezos Day 1 Family Foundation, which the billionaire founded in 2018, has awarded 170 grants totaling more than $521 million, the website reported.

In an interview with CNN on November 14, Bezos said that he and his partner, Lauren Sanchez, have pledged to donate the majority of their fortune – about $124 billion – to fight the climate crisis and support people who can bring humanity together.

After Bezos’ announcement, his ex-wife, Mackenzie Scott, wrote on her blog that in the past seven months, he has given nearly $2 billion to 343 organizations that support people in underserved communities. As a result, Scott has given away at least $14.5 billion of his fortune since 2019, when he signed the Giving Pledge. Pledge refers to a person’s commitment to donate a large portion of their wealth to charity.

Like Bezos, Scott has contributed to charities. In September, he donated two Beverly Hills homes worth $55 million to the California Community Foundation.
