CHANDIGARH: Days after her comments on the hijab made headlines, Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu on Wednesday said as a young countrywoman she simply shared her perspective when asked to comment on the issue.

The 24-year-old, who won the coveted competition earlier this year, said the issue in question was something he felt he “needed” to address because he believes people should live the way they choose.

“Being the youth of my country. I am a student of Masters in Public Administration, it is important to have your perspective about anything that is happening around the world,” Sandhu said at an event here.

A clip of the model actress went viral on social media last week in which a reporter can be seen asking Sandhu about her views on the hijab.

The video is part of an event held in Mumbai on March 17 on the eve of the Miss Universe 2021 homecoming.

In his response, he appealed to society to stop targeting girls, including on the issue of hijab, saying “Let them live the way they choose.”

On Wednesday, Sandhu reiterated her views, adding after she said people started suggesting she “supports” the practice of hijab.

“I think I just put my perspective on it. And at the end of the day, the girl is ruled by the patriarchy or if the girl wears the hijab, that’s her decision. Even if she’s taking over the government, she needs to come to. and speak.”

“Until she gets over herself, how can I support her? And if it’s her choice, then that’s her decision. Let her live the way she wants to live. We are all women. color, we are women of different culture. we have to respect each other, I think we all have different lives, so why do you want to press and dominate someone else?” he added.

Sandhu also spoke about being body shamed on social media as she revealed she has celiac disease, an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.

“I’m one of those individuals who was first bullied that ‘you’re skinny’ and now they bully me that you’re ‘fat’. Nobody knows about my Celiac disease. That I can’t eat flour wheat and many other things,” he said.

Sandhu, who has been globetrotting as part of her duties as the spokesperson of the Miss Universe Organization, said that people’s bodies undergo many changes when they live across different cities.

“When you go to a village, you see changes in yourself. And I went to New York for the first time. It was a whole other world.”

The model says that the fuss around her body image is not important to her.

“I am someone who believes in body confidence and one of the Miss Universes for the first time is going through this. On the site of Miss Universe, we talk about the empowerment of women, women, and body image.”

“And if I live that, I know there are many people who sell me and it’s not good because that’s their mindset, their stigma, but there are many other individuals who walk every day regardless of Their Miss Universe. or not. I am empowering them by making them feel that if I am beautiful, you are beautiful too,” she said.

It is in our mind how we see beauty, said Sandhu.

“For me everyone is beautiful. It’s about how you represent yourself and what kind of opinion you have. Your features are not important at one time. If you think I’m the best girl of she’s the reason why I won Miss Universe, I’m sorry, you’re wrong.”

“I may not be the prettiest (girl) but I may be one of those brave and confident girls who believe even if I’m fat, even if I’m thin, it’s me, I love myself. I Love Changes and you should appreciate it because not everyone can make it through changes. So be happy if you have changes. If you face challenges in life, you should you are grateful because this means something good will happen.”

Sandhu also met Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann at his official residence.

Later, while answering a question during his conversation with reporters here, he said that drug menace in the state, women empowerment, and other issues were discussed during the meeting with the chief minister.

He said he wants to do a lot for his home state Punjab.

“I am really looking forward to how I can support (the state). It was a beautiful and informative gathering,” he said of the meeting with Mann during which Aam Aadmi Party leader Raghav Chadha and the Sandhu family were also present.

Earlier in the day, the Punjab government shared a tweet about Sandhu’s meeting with the chief minister.

“Miss Universe @HarnaazKaur Sandhu called CM @BhagwantMann today at his official residence. Chief Minister congratulates her for making the country proud by bringing the Miss Universe title back to India after 21 years,” said a tweet by the Punjab government.

Speaking about her journey to win the Miss Universe 2021 pageant at the event, Sandhu said it was difficult for her to put the experience of winning the coveted crown after 21 years for the country into words.

He also thanks his family for being his constant pillar of support.
