Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu has gained weight since winning the crown in December – and cyberbullies have relentlessly targeted the star.

“Physically I’ve grown, gained more pounds, and my weight has increased, which is totally comfortable now,” the 22-year-old told People magazine on Wednesday.

The real problem, he said, has been the constant criticism on social media.

“I was teased because of my weight,” said the Indian beauty queen. “It’s kind of uncomfortable and really surprising to me to see how people start having ideas, which shouldn’t matter. It’s not about how you look, it’s about who you are from the inside and how you treat people and what you believe. “

Sandhu said that leading up to the competition, he had a no-nonsense approach to diet and exercise in hopes of winning. After you achieve your goal, you are able to rest for a month.

“At that time, I wasn’t really working, and I was just eating and enjoying that time with my family,” Sandhu explained. “I didn’t know I was going to start a show on myself.”

Sandhu told the company that some of the comments were so cruel that he would just cry.

“I definitely fell down a lot,” he admits. “Sometimes in the most unexpected moments, I just want to go on stage or something and then everything comes. [to] my heart. It’s really sad.”

Sandhu is also not feeling well. A doctor diagnoses you with allergies that affect your health.

“I can’t have wheat or anything with wheat,” she said of her gluten allergy. “Besides that, I also have a soy allergy [and] Coconut Allergy. I was allergic to teeth and I kind of knew that when I came to New York… It took me time to realize that the things I was allergic to, I was still having. I don’t know.”

The 70th Miss Universe titleholder said she now has a different opinion about herself, noting, “It’s good to cry. It’s good to be sad.”

The Bollywood actress also hopes her story will inspire others who struggle with their body image to embrace themselves, regardless of their size.

“We are all imperfect,” said Sandhu. “We need to know that there is a point where we understand that we need to accept our flaws and when you do that, you can win anything in this world.”

At the time of her victory, Sandhu said she was “overwhelmed because it’s been 21 years since India won the Miss Universe crown, and it’s happening now.”

Last year’s competition grabbed the headlines for a variety of reasons.

The Palestinian-led movement has urged contestants to skip the event to protest Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. Sara Salansky, an employee with the Israel Tourism Agency, said the country was chosen to host the competition because of Israel’s successful coronavirus vaccination program.
