The deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar has been extended from March 31, 2022 to March 31, 2023. However, linking PAN-Aadhaar will cost you from April 1, 2022, the deadline to keep your PAN operative without linking it to your Aadhaar. This was announced by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) vide notification dated March 29, 2022 and press release dated March 30, 2022.

If you link your PAN to your Aadhaar on or before June 30, 2022, you will be charged Rs 500. A fee of Rs 1,000 is required if Pan-Aadhaar linking is completed on or after July 1, 2022. Charges are now divided into their component parts

According to a CBDT press release, “In order to mitigate the inconvenience to taxpayers, as per Notification No. 17/2022 dated 29 March 2022, taxpayers have been provided an opportunity till 31 March 2023 to inform their Aadhaar to the prescribed authority for Aadhaar-PAN linking without facing consequences. Consequently, taxpayers A fee of Rs 500 will be payable for three months from 1st April 2022 and thereafter a fee of Rs 1000. Aadhaar will, however, continue to function for procedures under the Act like providing PAN, return of income, processing refunds etc. of assessees who have not disclosed their Aadhaar till 31st March 2023.

How to pay the penalty amount

According to a recent tweet on the official Twitter account of the Income Tax Department, here is how to pay the penalty amount.

“If linked till 30/06/22 Rs. 500 fee is to be paid, otherwise the fee payable is Rs. 1000. Fees payable through Challan No. ITNS 280 with Major Head 0021 (Income Tax other than Companies) and Minor Head 500 (Tax). Try to link after 4-5 working days from the date of payment.

Last date for Pan-Aadhaar linking

The deadline for linking PAN to Aadhaar number has been extended till March 31, 2023, after which PANs not linked to Aadhaar number will become inactive.

Why you should link PAN with Aadhaar

If PAN is not linked with Aadhaar by March 31, 2023, your PAN will be deactivated from April 1, 2023 next year. Once your PAN is deactivated, you will not be able to file income tax returns, open bank accounts, invest in mutual funds.

As per the Income Tax laws, every person who has PAN as on July 1, 2017 and is eligible to get Aadhaar number is required to inform the prescribed authority of his/her Aadhaar number by the prescribed date (as on March 31, 2022). As per previous Govt.’s order). On failure to do so, his/her PAN will be deactivated and all procedures requiring PAN will be suspended. As per the earlier notification, PAN could be implemented again after March 31, 2022 when Aadhaar is conveyed to the prescribed authority after paying the prescribed fee (up to Rs. 1000).

The Income Tax Department can impose a penalty of up to Rs 10,000 under Section 272B. However, it will now be levied if PAN becomes inactive after March 31, 2023 as a result of not being linked to Aadhaar.
