PAN will be inactive if not linked with Aadhaar before March 31, 2023 | Job Binary

The late fee you have to pay for linking your Aadhaar with your Permanent Account Number (PAN) has now been doubled to Rs. 1,000 from an earlier fine of Rs.500. This, the Central Board of Direct Taxes has extended the date of linking the two by one year – from March 31, 2022 to March 31, 2023.

If you fail to link your Aadhaar and PAN before March 31, 2023, your PAN will be deactivated. Basically, even if you have a valid PAN card, it cannot be accepted or used anywhere. In other words, you are considered not to have a valid PAN. Note that quoting PAN is mandatory for investing in stocks, mutual funds, loan and others.

So, here is the step-by-step process to link your PAN with Aadhaar as specified Income Tax Department.

First payment fee on NSDL website

Step 1: Go to Egov.nsdl website. Link- https://onlineservices.tin.egov-nsdl.com/etaxnew/tdsnontds.jsp

Step 2: Click on the ‘Challan No./ITNS 280 tab in the Non TDS/TCS category column and click on the Continue button.

Step 3: After you click the Continue button, a new window will open. You will have about 30 minutes to go through the payment transaction. On this page, you will see two options i.e. Tax Applicable and Payment Type.

According to the Income Tax Department, for payment of this specific fee related to Aadhaar and PAN linking, you need to select Income Tax Excluding Companies (0021) in the ‘Tax Applicable’ column.

For the Type of Payment column, you need to navigate down and click on the ‘(500) Other Receipts column.

Step 4: After you fill in the applicable tax and payment type, you need to enter your PAN, address, email id, mobile number and preferred mode of payment i.e. netbanking or debit card. Note that there is no option to pay this fee through Unified Payment Interface (UPI) or credit card. So, keep your bank debit card and netbanking details handy.

This was the last step, but don’t jump right into linking your Aadhaar and PAN. The process takes about four to five days. So, wait accordingly and try to link after that.

“Submit Pan-Aadhaar link request on e-filing portal after 4-5 working days of fee payment on NSDL (now Protein) portal,” reads a FAQ on the Income Tax Department’s portal.

Link Aadhaar number with PAN after 4-5 days

According to the Income Tax Department, there is currently no validity period after paying the Aadhaar-PAN linking fee on egov NSDL portal.

That is, wait for at least four to five days and after that, follow the steps below to link your Aadhaar with PAN.

Step 1: You need to log in with your PAN details on the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department.

Step 2: After you have successfully logged in, you should navigate to the ‘Dashboard’ page. There, you will find a button on the bottom left that says ‘Link Aadhaar to PAN’. Click on that link button. You can also find the same button in your personal details section.

Step 3: Now, enter your Aadhaar number and click on the Validate button, which you will find at the bottom right of the page.

Things to be careful of when linking

Check Challan Number: When you are paying fees on egov NSDL website, a receipt with challan number will be generated after you make the payment successfully.

Note this, because after at least four to five days, when you go to the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal and try to link your PAN and Aadhaar, the same challan number will be automatically quoted after you click. ‘Validate’ tab.

So here, check the challan number shown on Income Tax Department website with the receipt you got from NSDL. After you check it, click Continue.

Check if spelling in PAN is same as in Aadhaar: This is an important point, as your name, date of birth, gender and other details will be verified by the Income Tax Department and matched with the records kept by the UIDAI in the Aadhaar database.

If your name is different in both documents, go to the appropriate places and change them.

To update Aadhaar details, you have to go to the nearest Aadhaar Enrollment Center or if your mobile number is already linked with Aadhaar, you have to click on the UIDAI site.

To update your PAN card details, you need to go to NSDL site. After this, you have to proceed to the PAN column in the type of services and then proceed to the application to update the required details.
