Starfield Interview: Ex-Bethesda Developer Scales, Building a New Universe | Job Binary


We had the chance to interview Starfield, which could very well be Bethesda’s masterpiece of RPG gaming, as the studio follows the likes of Fallout and The Elder Scrolls to develop a new universe that redefines its open-world. world games for more open universes, thousands of planets to explore. That anticipation prompted us to chat with a former Bethesda developer who left Bethesda last year and struck out on his own after spending quite some time at Starfield.

This person is Nate Purkeypile, the founder of Just Purkey Games and a developer for 17 years, 14 of which were at Bethesda from Fallout 3 to Starfield as an artist on many projects. Naturally, Purkeypile couldn’t go into too much detail about Starfield due to contracts and it won’t be released until next year, but he did give us some interesting tidbits about the space project.

As for Starfield’s size, Purkeypil says it’s not only the biggest game Bethesda has ever made, but also the one that required the biggest team.

“The main thing that’s different about the scope of that project is, you know, Fallout 3, Skyrim, Fallout 4 because it was a single team. Fallout 76, it was mainly two, we had some help in Montreal, but it was mainly Austin and Maryland. [Bethesda] studios working together.

“But yeah, Starfield is a much bigger project, like 500 people on the team or something, but I think [Fallout] It was 76 maybe 200, peaks,” Purkeypil added, saying the overwhelming size of the development team was one of the reasons he decided to quit and make games on his own.

Purkeypil also said that the biggest challenge he faced while still in development on Starfield – bearing in mind that a lot could have changed about the game since he left – was the effort and detail that went into making a completely new fictional universe.

“It’s not always a problem to figure out how things should look,” explains Purkeypil, “What can be so many things, what shape do the metal panels look like? How do they connect things together? What colors do you use? What materials do they have? How do you tell them apart? do you have between all these different areas? So that’s a lot more difficult if you were to ask, well, make another follow-up game.

“You have to figure it all out, and all that extrapolative fiction is there to figure it out too. You’d be surprised how much metal paneling they’ve done in the concept,” added Purkeypil jokingly.

The Starfield will be big, so big in fact that it will have 1,000 planets to explore wherever they can land. We asked Purkeypile a few questions about how this was achieved, because while director Tod Howard previously mentioned that procedural generation is involved with 100 solar systems, we don’t know exactly how.

“I can’t go into the technological details of that,” says Purkypil, “the map [Fallout] 76 is almost twice as big in Skyrim, which was a lot of work for people, but yeah, it doesn’t scale. Even if you want to hire outsourcing, you should hire a country. He’s really a part of that team [working] in the planets”.

Purkeypile didn’t go into exactly how Bethesda made these planets, but it’s interesting to hear that the studio has come up with some sort of creative solution that allows for so much development for Starfield while still feeling unique.

We also talked about the Starfield reveal and, let’s face it, The Elder Scrolls 6’s lackluster. Purkeypil noted that while nothing of the fantasy game was shown, Starfield has been shown and will be released in part to set expectations for how long it will be until The Elder Scrolls 6 is actually released.

“So they have to say, ‘look, we’re going to set expectations.’ At this point [it’s been] More than 10 years, it’s quite unheard of to go that long without a follow-up.” He continues, “Sure there’s Elder Scrolls Online, but honestly I see it as a separate market for the MMO team. I think it’s going to take some time to let people know that’s definitely a part of it,” says Purkeypil.

So while we all wait for Starfield, hopefully Purkeypile’s time with the game can impress us, even if he wasn’t able to say too much about the direction of the upcoming Bethesda game.
