Sushmita Sen was crowned Miss Universe 28 years ago, on 21 May 1994. Sushmita marked the occasion with a photo of herself on Twitter. He wrote alongside, “Beauty is a feeling. It’s 28 years since India won Miss Universe for the first time!! Time flies…There is beauty!!!”

To mark the 28th anniversary of Sushmita’s historic victory, a fan page on Instagram shared a rare photo and video from the pageant held in the Philippines. Sharing a black and white picture showing Sushmita wearing a bright top and skirt with a veil, @thejuniorsush wrote, “21.05.94… Dearesssstttt Happy 28th Annual Shoot!!! You make us soooooo proud!!! Our tribe is soooooo proud!!! And, our country is soooooo proud!!! I love you!!”

In the throw photo, also featured is a quote of Sushmita’s. “I believe in passion more than ambition, so my career hope is to be a successful model and to enter later the creative field of either games, advertising, or writing.” It is not clear whether Sushmita’s quote is from an interview she did before or after she was crowned Miss Universe 1994.

In a minute-long clip, presumably from 1995, shared with the throwback photo, a radiant Sushmita Sen is seen dressed in a gorgeous lehenga, styled with a heavy dupatta on her head, as going on stage. The Miss Universe crown and sash complete her look, as she prepares for the upcoming Miss Universe crown.

In the video, the reigning Miss Universe is heard thanking her parents, family, and her motherland, India. “What I give tonight is only my crown, but I carry with me for the rest of my life, beautiful memories and a heart full of love that I experienced during my reign. I must be grateful for this glorious time, My motherland India and its proud people, my parents, my brothers, my friends, my teachers, because these are the ones who made me who I am today and helped me to realize my greatest strength. tonight as I’m going out, I won’t say goodbye because every end is a new beginning, What the world calls the end of the heap, God calls it a butterfly. Sushmita Sen became the 43rd Miss Universe at the Plenary Hall of the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay, Philippines. It was crowned by Dayanara Torres of Puerto Rico. In the same year, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was crowned Miss World 1994.
