When EA started putting games back on Steam in 2019, I immediately forgot my Origin password as an act of joy. That may have been premature, as the era of many PC game clients was far from over: EA stopped cloistering its PC games to the Origin store, but the Steam versions launched the Origin client when you started them.
That was not true in each one The new game published by EA on Steam, however. I was surprised that F1 2021 doesn’t require Origin, for example. Another exception will be the Steam version of the Dead Space version (Opens in a new tab)which releases in January.
“Dead Space is original to Steam,” an EA representative said when asked for comment.
EA didn’t say whether the decision is part of a wider plan to remove the Origin client for Steam releases, but I doubt it. The upcoming Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will require Origins, according to its Steam page (Opens in a new tab). Reddit speculation (Opens in a new tab) Before EA “finally looked at Steam reviews” it could be optimistic.
For Dead Space, however, EA’s statement confirms that the usual third-party DRM notice was not forgotten, or temporarily lost, as EA is in the process of transitioning from Origin to the new EA Launcher, as some speculated in that Reddit thread. . The timing is odd, though: EA announced today (Opens in a new tab) that its new launcher is out of open beta and will “soon replace Origin.”
However, Dead Space is apparently a regular Steam game with no external client.
It probably won’t make much of a difference to our in-game Dead Space remake experience, but I’m glad to be spared the discomfort of seeing even a small fraction of the resources drawn from the nonsensical DRM-on-DRM. A PC gamer’s natural and inevitable aversion to unnecessary background processes is indifferent to their importance. Taskbar icons are enemies.
As for that in-game experience, the Dead Space remake got a new trailer the other day, and the revised USG Ishimura and necromorphs look every bit as creepy and grotesque as I’d hoped. The only thing I’m not sure about is Isaac having a voice – I preferred it as the silent Gordon Freeman type in the original. However, I can’t be too self-righteous about being drawn to the way things were. He voiced Isaac in Dead Space 2 and 3, so Motive’s remakes haven’t left the developer entirely too far from the overall source material.
Dead Space comes out on January 27th.
