Capital managed to fight the pandemic without a complete shutdown
Abu Dhabi achieved the world’s highest vaccination rate of nearly 100 percent, the Abu Dhabi Department of Health (DoH) has announced.
“Thanks to the vaccination campaign launched by Abu Dhabi, the emirate managed to achieve the highest vaccination rate worldwide, close to 100 percent,” the DoH said on Facebook.
According to the DoH, the emirate of Abu Dhabi successfully managed to navigate and fight the pandemic without a complete shutdown.
This struck a balance between ensuring the health and safety of individuals and the stable continuity of businesses and the economy in the emirate.
The UAE was one of the first countries in the world to launch a Covid-19 vaccination campaign. So far, Abu Dhabi is one of the highest cities in the world for vaccination rates worldwide.
“One of the most beautiful things that came out of the pandemic was a sense of community. People started to look out for each other more,” the DoH said.
Abu Dhabi’s advanced and robust healthcare infrastructure, commitment and leadership was once again recognized by Deep Knowledge Analytics as the world’s best pandemic-resilient city globally, according to a report released by the Abu Dhabi Media Office mid-last month (DKA, the DeepTech analytics subsidiary of London-based Deep Knowledge Group (DKG).
According to the report, the recognition reflects the emirate’s comprehensive, effective and timely response to the Covid-19 pandemic, which established Abu Dhabi’s healthcare sector as a leading model regionally and internationally.
In a similar report published by the DKA in the first half of 2021, Abu Dhabi was also rated as a leading city in response to Covid-19 worldwide. Since then, 28 cities have been studied and added to the list, which now estimates a total of 100 cities.
The Pandemic-resilient Cities Ranking assesses the continued progress of key cities and makes additional policy recommendations to address major gaps. The report is based on six parameters that city governments have focused on to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and demonstrate resilience and preparedness for similar public health issues in the future. These parameters are government efficiency, financial flexibility, health management, quarantine measures, vaccination strategy and cultural compliance.
The emirate reached a Covid-19 testing capacity of more than 500,000 tests per day and established 27 drive-thru testing and vaccination centers where almost 100 percent of the community has received the Covid-19 vaccination. In addition, Abu Dhabi managed to increase healthcare capacity by 200 percent in the number of patient beds in hospitals and increase the number of intensive care beds by 300 percent. All of this is supported by agile, data-driven, science-based and world-leading policies and interventions that resulted in one of the lowest per capita mortality and infection rates worldwide.
The efforts are in line with Abu Dhabi’s efforts to leverage life sciences, innovation, digitalization and medical tourism to position itself as a leading healthcare destination. The emirate continues to offer the latest innovative treatments to maintain the health and safety of the community. DoH signed strategic agreements with major international pharmaceutical companies to provide the latest treatments to patients with mild, moderate and critical symptoms, as well as immunocompromised patients who cannot receive vaccinations; and provide preventative treatments to protect all community members from the Covid-19 virus.
Abu Dhabi also received the first global shipment of AstraZeneca’s Evusheld, which produces antibodies for immunocompromised patients. In addition, Abu Dhabi and Roche, the world’s largest biotech company, announced a strategic partnership to introduce the latter’s casirivimab and imdevimab for the prevention and treatment of mild to moderate symptoms in Covid-19 patients.
Globally, Abu Dhabi is playing a leading role in global efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic by participating in clinical trials of Covid-19 vaccines and therapeutic innovations, and contributing to the pace of vaccine and drug development and distribution. to the world. Abu Dhabi managed to take advantage of its great geographical location and advanced healthcare infrastructure to establish a unique pharmaceutical corridor, the HOPE Consortium.
An Abu Dhabi-led public-private partnership helped lead the global response to the Covid-19 pandemic by delivering more than 260 million doses of vaccine to more than 60 countries around the world. The emirate’s Covid-19 testing capabilities are also being used to assist several countries in their epidemiological investigations.
