Biodiversity and wildlife conservation and development have always received great attention in the UAE. A new species of crustacean, Cladocera, was discovered by Shamma Eisa Al Neyadi, a master’s student in the Department of Biology at the College of Science, UAE University, after a field survey in the Shuwaib Dam area in the United Arab Emirates.

The student worked with a group of researchers and scientists at the University of the United Arab Emirates and international scientific research centers, especially at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, Russia.

“The reason (I chose) to major in biology is my passion for science since childhood…the passion, desire and love for scientific research, anatomy and knowing the composition of living microorganisms,” Al Neyadi explained.

“The journey of research and learning led me to travel to Russia and work at the Russian Academy of Sciences with experts and researchers from several countries around the world due to precise specialization and laboratory research and scientific expertise and technology. research centers in this vital and important field.”

He added: “It was a great experience through which I learned a lot and reviewed many international studies and scientific publications in this field. In addition, the researchers have high scientific competence in laboratory work, through which I have been able to learn and transfer knowledge and scientific, technical experience and apply them in the laboratories of the United Arab Emirates.

“Camera lucida” is one of the newest devices in laboratories today. It can be used to transfer what is visible under the microscope onto paper. The main reason for its use is a detailed accurate drawing of all the details of a living organism to be transferred under the microscope, in addition to being used as clear scientific evidence in research and scientific fields. It creates a more accurate drawing than a standard microscopic image.

Al Neyadi stated that his choice to study crustaceans, particularly Cladocera, is due to the lack of scientific discoveries for many reasons, including the lack of fresh water in addition to the country’s climate, as well as the lack of research. freshwater fauna and flora, and most studies focus on water salinity or durability.

He added: “My vision for the future in this field is that if the scientific discoveries continue, we can build a national database in the UAE that includes all the crustaceans in the country and study their origins, besides the fact that the field is new in our country at the moment and if it is given the most attention, it can be transformed from a scientific project to an economic one, especially since shellfish can be used as a safe and sustainable food for fishing projects and fish farming as marine food in a clean and safe environment. I remain passionate about scientific research and discovery in this important field.”

“I believe that this diversity, both on land and in the sea, is an integral part of the UAE’s heritage, and scientific studies and research into the biodiversity of cladocera, or crustaceans, in freshwater ecosystems are being intensified globally. However, the animals or crustaceans, particularly in some hydrographic areas, are still unknown.”

“We have studied the species richness and composition of Cladocera in the United Arab Emirates in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences to achieve important results that confirm the need to continue research in “Christacera and Cladocera crustaceans”, the national UAE database in this important field of research and science.
